Metropolitan Sanctuary for Children with Disability 

It gives us pleasure to introduce our work to you. We are a charitable Christian rehabilitation facility in Nyeri, central Kenya, that has been providing quality rehabilitation services to children with disability for over a decade. Founded by Northern Irish church, Whitewell Metropolitan Tabernacle Church, Belfast, we rely on fundraising efforts and well wishers in order to operate.

We are not just a typical rehab centre, we aspire to pioneer innovative solutions to help the lives of persons with disability, often focusing on recycling, focusing on empowerment, and use of local people, tools and materials!  

Services include:

• Custom made adaptive equipment including special seating & standing frames among many others, made out of recycled cardboard boxes, newspaper and wheat flour. Extremely innovative and cost effective, these environmentally friendly pieces of equipment are designed by UK trained seating and positioning experts, and are life changing.
• Development of moulded chairs for complex deformities, made from body casting methods. We are pioneering this exciting service for Kenya and is changing the lives of persons with the most complex of postural needs.
• Partnership with Walkabout Foundation UK/US; a wheelchair provider into many developing nations world wide. Together, we are developing innovative low cost methods to seat children and adults with complex positioning needs. 
• Orthotics & prosthetics. We are currently collaborating with Cambridge University, England on research to develop methods of recycling HDPE plastics into thermoplastic sheets for use in the rehabilitation sector.
• Skill and capacity building for rehabilitation centres and their workers across Kenya
• Outpatient physical and occupational therapy clinic on site
• Nursing care, doctor’s review & medicine
• Day care facility on site, for children who get locked indoors alone to come and receive a daily program of care, Monday – Friday.
• 24hr care Rescue Centre offering a home to children in need from abusive, neglectful homes, or in cases of abandonment
• Counseling and support network to caregivers of persons with disability

• On site income generating project known as Sanctuaryartists where the team make hand made paper and craft products to retail across Kenya UK and USA

• We operate centrally in Nyeri, but also run satellite rehabilitation and positioning equipment clinics and training right across Kenya and regular community home visits.
