As part of Franciscan Health, the Family Medicine Residency joins in the mission to continue Christ’s Ministry in the Franciscan Tradition.
Residency Program
Franciscan Health Family Medicine Residency is dedicated to training compassionate, adaptable, and highly skilled physicians who are equipped to practice full‑spectrum medicine in a wide variety of settings. Located just 10 minutes south of downtown Indianapolis, our residency is an unopposed family medicine program that fosters exceptional hands-on learning, strong patient ownership, and close mentorship by engaged faculty who are deeply invested in education, professional development, and physician wellness. Our mission is to train family physicians who care for the whole person and understand the profound influence of social, economic, and environmental factors on health.
Our program offers the ideal balance of academic rigor and supportive, relationship-centered learning. We provide a strong foundation in outpatient continuity care while ensuring robust training in inpatient medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and procedural skills. Our graduates are well prepared for community practice, hospital-based care, underserved settings, and fellowship training. Our program serves a diverse and culturally rich patient population reflective of the south side of Indianapolis, including many patients who are native speakers of Spanish, Burmese, Chin, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Punjabi, and Swahili, among others. Residents learn to look beyond the exam room by working with diverse patient populations and interdisciplinary care teams that include nursing, behavioral health, care management, pharmacy, and social work.
Interested residents may pursue additional high track focus areas including obstetrics, hospital medicine, sports medicine, addiction care, lifestyle medicine, osteopathic designation, and more. We collaborate with each resident to assist them in pursuing their passions. Elective time provides flexibility for both local and away rotations, including global and underserved health experiences. We have partnered with Timmy Global Health where our residents and faculty have opportunities to pursue international rotations each year.
Your time at Franciscan makes you family. Outside of clinical work, our residents and faculty regularly gather for social events and to celebrate significant occasions together. We are proud of the collegial culture we have built, one that values family, teamwork, curiosity, and mutual respect while carrying forth Christ’s compassion in a ministry of healing.
Our residents graduate as confident, caring physicians who are well prepared to practice family medicine in any setting. They leave with strong clinical skills, a deep sense of purpose, and a commitment to caring for the whole person. If you are seeking a mission-driven, community-focused, unopposed residency program with a supportive culture and diverse patient population, we invite you to reach out to learn more about who we are, not just through our website, but through the people who make our program a rewarding place to train.
