I began my global health and missions career in northeast Congo (then Zaire) in 1980 with a two-month medical school experience doing community health. Our family returned to Africa in 1992 to work with Africa Inland Mission (AIM) at AIC Kijabe Hospital, where I served for a total of nine years as a family physician and medical director. In 2000, the Institute of Family Medicine (INFA-MED), a Kenyan-based NGO, collaborated with Moi University (Eldoret) to to begin Kenya’s first Family Medicine program. I served on the five-person curriculum-writing team. The three-year program launched in January, 2005, at three church and one government district hospitals of 220 – 300 beds each. As Director from 2002 – 2010, INFA-MED launched: a small group CME program, ALSO obstetrical skills course, scholarship program for residents. Current projects include: Africa-relevant clinical decision support resources on smartphones (Digital African Health Library); comprehensive basic emergency skills course to promote rural hospital teams (CALS Essentials); and developing faculty expertise in teaching and mentoring (Eastern Africa Health Professions Educators' Association). From 2015 - 17 I was founding Head of the Dept. of Family Medicine at Kabarak University, East Africa's first Christian-based family medicine residency. I attended Bethel University, the University of Minnesota Medical School, and residency at the University of North Dakota. During 1995 – 2000 I was Asst. Director for Duluth Family Medicine Residency Program and Clinical Curriculum supervisor at U of MN Medical School Duluth. I completed the Master of Science in Health Professions Education at Maastricht University, Netherlands, in 2010.
